WOAPA – West Oxfordshire Academy of Performing Arts is working in partnership with local organisations to offer FREE scholarship places to attend their new Saturday afternoon school for one year.

WOAPA is a Children’s Theatre School based in Witney, offering classes at weekends in dance, singing and acting. Having opened its doors in Feb 2012 with a masterclass dance session by Kylie Minogue choreographer: Tim Noble, the theatre school has filled its classes within 6 months.

The Scholarships are being offered for the NEW Saturday afternoon school which opens on November 10th 2012 and will run from 2.00pm – 5.0pm Places are being offered to give children from a variety of backgrounds, opportunities to participate in the performing arts.

Scholarship places are open to:

  • 3 tenants of Cottsway Housing (one each, aged 7-9, 10-12 & 12-13)
  • 3 children residing in West Oxfordshire, through Witney TV.
  • 2 students from Henry Box School (one each from tutor groups 7-8 and 9-11)
  • 1 student from The Batt School, Witney, aged 7+

Alongside providing the students with opportunities to gain skills in performing arts, WOAPA aims to improve the health and prospects of children throughout West Oxfordshire. As part of this they are offering scholarships to attend the new classes.

“Raising children’s confidence and self-esteem is a big part of WOAPA” says Brian Conroy, principal.

“By offering scholarships we are hoping to give those children who, perhaps, wouldn’t usually be able to attend a drama school, the chance to benefit from all the positive aspects of the performing arts including increased physical fitness levels, a positive attitude and a sense of achievement.”

“We have some wonderful tutors, all hand-picked for their experience and enthusiasm. WOAPA’s aim is to provide quality tuition at affordable prices. We have a keen eye on providing good customer service and parents are regularly telling us they think we’re the best theatre school for children in the area”

Students from the Saturday morning school have performed at Witney’s Jubilee celebrations and a ‘flashmob’ in central Oxford in support of SpecialEffect charity. They have also taken part in a Bollywood masterclass with Sohan Kailey of Aashiyana Arts.

Woapa will be performing at this year’s Christmas lights switch-on event, on the main stage, Market Sq Witney, on 30th November 2012.
